These charming young men to the left are Boowa and Kwala, the main characters for the site Up To Ten. This is a great site, with educational games (but I won't tell the kids if you don't - my grandkids just think the games are fun and often hilarious, and I mean laugh out loud hilarious). The games each have age recommendations, as well as icons, coded by color (ie blue for intellectual agility, orange for computer literacy, green for motor skills, and red means a parental presence is needed to help the child along) and by symbols (that indicate, for example, craft activity, fine motor skills, listening, creativity, imagination, and so on).
The site has a search engine, to help your child find a particular game that he or she has forgotten the name of or can't find, or to help you search for specific activities or skills that you wish your child to work on.
This is a very good site, not one of those cheapy things, and has over 1000 games - every single one my gk's have tried (for and near their age group/ ability) they have loved. It rates right up there with PBS Kids, Nick Jr, and they like it better than Disney's (tho they DO like Disney's site, they just play Up To Ten more often, likely because it has more games for their age groups.)
The games are for ages 2 and under (yes, they can), 3 to 4, 4 to 6, and 6 and up. Any time your child has chosen his or her own game and you want the info, there's a gray button that you can click on to learn all the details of the game such as age recommendation and the skills it hones.
The site my kids use is completely free, and they have not begun to delve into the deep pool of games offered there. But if you wish there is a premium site, with about 250 more games (not a big difference considering the free site has 1110), and no ads, pen pals, probably a couple things I am forgetting (I only checked it out for this blog, I never wanted or needed for our use). Of course it also helps support the site, and maybe when the economy is better, I'll at least donate something to them. The prices are reasonable, less than most I've seen, and they have a great deal if you get it by the quarter, year etc. The monthly price is $6.60; the quarterly price is 16.50, and if you paid this one month at a time it would cost 19.80 so you save 3.30 there. The bi-annual price is even better, at 29.70 for 6 months, a savings of 9.90 compared to the monthly
price. And in a year the price is 79.20 if you pay one month at a time, but if you subscribe for the year the price is only 29.70, a ridiculous savings of over 50 dollars.
But, as I said, I see no need to pay anything at all since the free site is so excellent. I'm not gonna add this as a link, because I've tried to twice and something is going wrong somewhere and it just won't take. But it's simple enough to remember:
www.uptoten.com - oh it made it a link anyhow, let's hope it works this time, for the sake of my nerves at 5:36 AM!
